Super Dub Pressure – Brighton

Super Dub Pressure….one of my Dubstep highlights of the year so far!
We arrived down in Brighton Friday evening around 6, dropped our bags off with Will (High Rankin), who when we walked up to his house was busy shouting out of his window “Ill kick you in the snout if you come up here” at the feral dogs in the alleyway, throwing used tea bags at them aswell, with a volume of slobber and spit secreting from his lips.
We first head to a club called Digital where they were hosting the Brighton Vice Magazine party, where we briskly shuffled by the long line and through the vip entrance where after being in the club i got frisked and searched as if i was planning to bomb the place…NOT COOL! There were the most insane amounts of “teenage imo kids” there that i have ever seen in one place at the same time!
After getting some rum and coke and drinking it on the beach we link back up with Will and take a cab to the dubstep venue in Brighton, where our other party would take place. The Concorde 2 was quite a venue…although not as big as i had suspected. Ive heard of it many times through the dnb scene, and i thought quite frankly it would have been bigger than it was.
The gramps 30 K Hi-Fi sound system was absolutely smashing! Clean, warm sound…we could even talk to one another although there was the most amazing sound floating around the room! Wicked! No earplugs needed, to my suprise!
Upon our arrival Distance was playing in the main room. I didn’t catch much of his set, but from what i heard he was bangin out wicked beats!
Next up i caught Youngsta, also in the main room. this guy’s mixing skills are really amazing….i didnt notice a flaw, train-wreck or mistake in his whole set. The tune selection wasnt really my thing, but gotta take my hat off to him for his mixing skills…fo sure!
After participating in the infamous slogan from Mr Guy Brazil “Drink, skank, Smoke, Repeat” we checked out the front room where Dokkebi Q were smashing it up with a live Japanese vocalist! Turns out that the Japanese pair live in East London…what a suprise! These guys sounds and set were absolutely FIRE! The beats were crisp, matched with synth sounds and samples/effects from a few small what looked like Korg break out boxes. The dj and vocalist definitely knew what they were doing as tune selection was hot, tempo was proper and they never skipped a beat/rhyme! Id love to get some more info and do a proper review of these 2 artists as their style and sound is right up my street!
We again were victims of the mighty “Drink, skank, Smoke, Repeat” syndrome and rushed back inside to check out Vex’d Live! WOW…what a spectrum of sounds! This was my highlight of the night (with Dokkebi Q coming in a near 2nd)! I now understand the hype about these guys as their set was really really good! I think i danced more to this set than any other dubstep set of the year.
In the front room we skanked our way through the crowd and made it to check out Oneman’s set. Quite impressive i must say. Every time i see this guy play he is absolutely tearing up dancefloors with quality vip tunes i somehow only ever hear him play. Biggles and respect the one-man-dj !!
Cheffal graced the stage with the closing set as Benga was apparently double booked! He threw down the standard smashers id hear him and N Type play on their Rinse FM Sunday night show, along with a few select cuts here and there. A true disk jockey….master of the decks…Chef never ceases to amaze me! Quality set aswell, with the legendary!
After taking the scenic (very long) route back home on my 2 stumps, or at least my legs felt like stubs..with my right foot hurting more and more we end up back at Will’s pad. Make a zoot and crash out! All in all id have to say it was one of my favourite dubstep experiences to date! Thank you Tom & Letti for the nice party and shouts to all that were in attendance (Georgina, Kid Cazual, Alex Incyde, Cluekid, Guy Brazil, High Rankin and anyone else i forgot!)
