Heard of MATTER ? Check it out…
No commentsRam moves to Matter + dubstep

One thing im really bummed about is not getting to check out London’s newest mega club Matter. Created by the owners of Fabric, its a club that i really really wish i could have gone to before leaving the UK and moving back to Southern California.
I regularly get press and release updates from the lovely Fabric crew and wanted to share this excerpt from their latest press release regarding Ram Records moving to Matter:
It’s been a rather apocalyptic time for London clubland over the course of 2008 – with the closure of Turnmills, Canvas, The Cross, The Key, and the impending closure of The End. And it could be argued that no one scene has been affected, or hit quite as hard, as drum & bass. Beyond concluding the bountiful D&B residencies at The End (Marky & Friends, Shogun Audio, Ram Records, Renegade Hardware, Swerve), countless D&B parties held at Turnmills and mammoth D&B raves at Bagley’s (aka Canvas, back in the day), D&B recently got knocked back even further when Heaven changed its programming and dropped Hospitality off its roster two months ago.
FRIDAY 6 FEBRUARY RAM
matter
10pm-6am
ACROSS ROOMS ONE & TWO:
Andy C (2hr Set) / Goldie / Chase & Status / Hype / Sub Focus / Noisia / Red One / Commix B2B D-Bridge / Shimon (Breaks Set) / Culture Shock / Skream / Caspa / Youngsta / Plastician MC’s: GQ / Dynamite MC / IC3 / Fats / Rod Aslan / Crazy DFor the launch of matter, Ram called upon some of their biggest luminaries and most closely-aligned peers, and even took a chance to embrace a few unexpected stars (with dubstep’s finest: Skream, Caspa, Youngsta, Plastician).
As the dust settles from London clubland’s misfortunes, drum & bass fans need to look no further for a new playground - matter is the ultimate setting for its biggest heavyweights, Ram and Hospital. The residencies mark a meeting of minds: Europe’s most forward thinking new venue and two of D&B’s most forward thinking labels.
Big up to all involved and id love to hear Skream, Caspa, Youngsta & Plastician on that rig in there!!

2 commentsThe Mole - Live
Introducing The Mole, one of Canada’s finest producers, gracing London next weekend at Fabric!
He has done an exclusive minimix for Fabric, download or stream it here.

The Mole moved to Montreal from Canada’s west coast where dance music fans in Victoria and Vancouver in the 90s heard a lot of the mole in his infancy. His mentors, believing he had a natural talent, pushed him from his DJ beginnings into music production. 7 years of residency at the Laika bar and numerous appearances at the Mutek festival have ensured his prime position in the Canadian electronic music scene.
Urb magazine named him one of the ‘next 100′ in 2004. His live set at Mutek 2004 was one of the top ten in the Village Voice Critics’ Poll 2004, followed by 2005’s collaboration with long time friend and band mate Mathew Jonson ‘Dirt Road and a Boat From Soundwave’ on Kompakt’s Speicher was received with critical acclaim. As were his releases that year on Philpot, Musique Risquee and Revolver. 2005 also saw the reunion of the Modern Deep Left Quartet on Wagon Repair, probably the greatest source of pride for el molito to date.
There is also what the mole refers to as the ’starchy root machine’. And with a title like that, it should spark some interest! Anyway, it is a performance in which a minimum of 5 turntables are all playing loops that are either manufactured or hand made. With this the mole then manipulates them, in a traditional dj sense, with some effects to bump it up (what he confesses is quite a psychedelic experience for him). And although he has, because of other projects had to put this endeavor on the back burner for a little while, he still gets questioned on when he will bring it back. ‘I’ve only ever done it in Montreal because I think the number of tables scares people and it is fairly experimental… though terribly techno as well”.
With his 2006 ‘In my song/Acadian’ being signed to a Sven Vath mix and a part time collaboration with Paddy from Cobblestone Jazz as the ‘Smokin Posties’ releasing their first remix on itiswhatitis, things were heading in the right direction for the mole. 2007 saw further standout releases on Wagon Repair and late in the year a relocation to Europe, where he’d spent much of the summer months touring.
Now 2008 heralds even greater things as The Mole releases his debut album ‘As High As The Sky’ on Wagon Repair and prepares to tour around it across the globe.
He loves music with a humble and honest gratitude that can be heard throughout his work.

As Manny Moscow & I make our way from Stretham up to Farringdon via Brixton i eventually come out of my sleepy daze…as i was lucky enough to have a nap before the heavy night. Over the years ive always have a good time at Fabric. Ive never seen such a overwhelming Dubstep lineup there, but props to the promoters who packed the big club out, with friendly and open minded people.
Pinch smacked it with the Bristol sound but I take my hat off to Loefah and Congo Natty… they were in my opinion the act of the night…slammin beats with a don MC…i was movin throughout the whole set…spilling beer everywhere and loving it!
Lee “Scratch” Perry + Adrian Sherwood performed a live set which was amazing. The sound and vibe in the main room was poppin!
Check some video here of Irration Steppas, Lee “Scratch” Perry & Adrian Sherwood and Pole (Live):
Rusko, Blackdown & Dusk, Quest and Kode 9 + Flow Dan were all fire! Heard a few new beats around the shop which were very tasty!
All in all the night was big! I wish i could have seen more of the artists which played! Even got some German food (Bratwurst & Potato stir fry) from across the street before we jumped in a cab to head back south…result! The sound in all 3 rooms were spot on! I didn’t have my earplugs with me and didn’t suffer from ringin ears the next morning, although the sound was heavy as fu*k.
Looking forward to the next Dublime!
