Easy reverse engineering of malware

I found a pretty cool article on the SunbeltBLOG regarding on how to easily reverse engineer malware if it’s written in AutoIt, a popular scripting tool. You simply unpack the malware and then run it through the AutoIt decompilation utility (exe2aut).

In the below video Didier Stevens shows how a piece of malware author’s code was exposed:

Remember…if you think you may be infected with a Virus or Malware, you can always use the FREE online tools from Trend Micro like Housecall or the Free Online Spyware Scan.

Updating VVindows Anyone ?

Trend Micro

I found this very interesting article on the Trend Micro blog. I wonder how many people have actually used this new Russian site, as it does seem a very crafty idea to trick people into thinking that they are actually visiting a Windows Update site!

No, that’s not a typo. The title for this blog entry is really “Updating VVindows”, with a double V instead of a W. If you’ve noticed that the word “Windows” was written with two Vs instead of a W, then good for you. Chances are, you won’t be easily fooled by VVINDOWSUPDATE.COM

We’ve recently received reports regarding a newly registered domain name called VVINDOWSUPDATE.COM. Created last July 9, this site apparently wants to trick people into thinking that it’s the actual update site for Windows (which is actually http://www.update.microsoft.com). Although there are no pages on the site yet, it’s highly possible that VVINDOWSUPDATE.COM can be used for future web threat attacks.

Here’s some related info on the domain:

Human Zoo Festival

PixelFactor.org Feature - Human Zoo Festival

Human Zoo is a new and exciting electronic music and arts festival for the East of England that aims to bring a friendly and intimate house party feel infused with a sprightly summer festival vibe. The three day outdoor party sees three music tents, hosted by the award winning club brand Spectrum, London’s warehouse sensation Slaang and Leeds institution Technique, who will each provide some of the UK’s and world’s most exciting and upfront live acts and DJs. The line up is as strong and varied as you’ll see for a small scale festival in its first year, and encompasses some of today’s best electronic advocates, from deep house and techno, over to drum and bass, breaks, beats, hip-hop, electro, not forgetting a slice of indie, folk and jazz, and so much more across three glorious days, nestled in the beautiful east of England, right between Cambridge and Ipswich, and only 45 minutes from London.

As well as the three main music arenas there will be an acoustic band stand, Spitfire air display, fireworks, entertainers, healing fields, children’s activities and entertainment, chill out tent, art gallery, saunas and hot tubs, Bedouin cinema and an art gallery all on a fantastic site just a couple of miles outside Bury St Edmonds in Suffolk, East Anglia. More details of exactly what will be happening in the arts festival side of Human Zoo will be coming shortly.

The first event for Human Zoo, originally conceptualized by teenagers Tom Notley and Dan Soler, has Pete Jordan (of Spectrum fame) curating the overall programming of the event, and together they feel they are the cusp of something special. With all other festivals in the UK having thrown their hats into the ring, so to speak, Human Zoo comes through a little late but all the better for it. Seeking to foster a new kind of festival environment, with as much music as there is traditional festival activity to engage in, Human Zoo represents a left of center philosophy far away from the more obvious events.

Wait for the reveiw as Mr DNBSPACE and myself will be attending. Expect some crazy stories and photos to come!

Trend Micro OS Protection BETA

Trend Micro

Trend Micro OS Protection beta:

Trend Micro today, in the US i believe released Trend Micro OS Protection beta for its Trend Micro internet security 2007 customers. OS protection includes Trend Micro Firewall Booster and Trend Micro Pre-Startup Scan.

Rather than rail against various kernel changes within Windows Vista as Symantec and other did last fall, Trend Micro says it wanted to work in cooperation with Microsoft. Trend Micro OS Protection works on both the 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows Vista.

The chief benefit from Trend Micro Firewall Booster is Windows Vista users won’t have dual firewall technologies running. Firewall Booster leverages existing Windows Vista Firewall capabilities, adding protection provided by Trend Micro. Trend Micro Pre-Startup Scan runs before Windows Vista boots, ferreting out sleeping malware such as rootkits before engaging the operating system. Pre-Startup includes a system restore checkpoint, so that a user can always roll back any changes made. The process is not automatic, allowing the user to decide when and how the scans will be done.

Quick Scan takes only a few minutes and identifies rootkits and any browser-related malware. Full Scan performs a thorough scan all of the files on the system. While Full Scan can take up to a half hour to complete (all the while Windows Vista is not running), there is an option to shut down the system afterward so Full Scans can be run late at night.

Trend Micro OS Protection beta is available in addition to the existing certified by Microsoft as Windows Vista compatible firewall protection within Trend Micro Internet Security 2007. OS Protection is designed for more advanced Trend Micro users who want a more powerful firewall and is not necessary for average Internet users. Available for download from the TrendSecure site, OS Protection is free of charge to existing Trend Micro Internet Security 2007 customers.

This looks totally cool to me! Looking forward to seeing something like this in the EMEA regions.

Petaflop era has begun…IBM’s Blue Gene

A pretty amazing acheivement i must say! Check out this article i found on News.com

Absolutely amazing!!

The petaflop era has begun.

IBM has devised a new Blue Gene supercomputer–the Blue Gene/P–that will be capable of processing more than 3 quadrillion operations a second, or 3 petaflops, a possible record. Blue Gene/P is designed to continuously operate at more than 1 petaflop in real-world situations.

Blue Gene/P marks a significant milestone in computing. Last November, the Blue Gene/L was ranked as the most powerful computer on the planet: it topped out at 280 teraflops, or 280 trillion operations a second during continuous operation.

Put another way, a Blue Gene/P operating at a petaflop is performing more operations than a 1.5-mile-high stack of laptops.

The development of Blue Gene/P seems certain to extend IBM’s position atop the Top 500 Supercomputer list, which comes out this week at the International Supercomputing Conference in Dresden, Germany. IBM had 93 computers on the list when the rankings last came out in November; four were in the top 10.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory will deploy the first Blue Gene/P in the U.S. later this year. Meanwhile, in Germany, the Max Planck Society and the Forschungszentrum Julich research center will start to install a Blue Gene/P in late 2007. Others will be installed at Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Labs (New York facilities that have collaborated with IBM on other projects) and the Science and Technology Facilities Council in Cheshire, England.

Like the vast majority of other modern supercomputers, Blue Gene/P is composed of several racks of servers lashed together in clusters for large computing tasks, such as running programs that can graphically simulate worldwide weather patterns.

Technologies designed for these computers trickle down into the mainstream while conventional technologies and components are used to cut the costs of building these systems.

The chip inside Blue Gene/P consists of four PowerPC 450 cores running at 850MHz each. A 2×2 foot circuit board containing 32 of the Blue Gene/P chips can churn out 435 billion operations a second. Thirty two of these boards can be stuffed into a 6-foot-high rack.

The chip inside the Blue Gene/L contained two PowerPC cores running at 700MHz.

The 1-petaflop Blue Gene/P comes with 294,912 processors and takes up 72 racks in all. Hitting 3 petaflops takes an 884,736-processor, 216-rack cluster, according to IBM. The chips and other components are linked together in a high-speed optical network.

Several companies will be in the German city this week to tout supercomputer accomplishments. Sun Microsystems will use the show to show off its Constellation System, which features a switching architecture that Sun says will greatly enhance performance. The first Constellation System, which Sun hopes will be ready by October and is building in Texas, will provide 500 teraflops of performance at its peak. Constellation is capable of 1.7 petaflops.
